An eSIM is a virtual SIM card built into your phone — no physical card needed. After purchase, you instantly receive a QR code by email, scan it to install, all done online. Key differences from a physical SIM: no airport queuing, no ID registration, doesn't use your physical SIM slot, so you keep your home number active at the same time.

RoamMelb sells Data-Only eSIMs — no phone number and no SMS function are included. This means no ID registration is required. You can still use all data-based voice services normally, such as WhatsApp, WeChat voice calls, FaceTime, etc.

Important: The phone you scan the QR code with must be the phone you're installing the eSIM on. Since you can't scan and install simultaneously on one device, use a second device (another phone, tablet, or computer) to open the email and display the QR code, then scan it with the target phone.

The eSIM timer starts when you first connect to the local network at your destination — not when you purchase or install. You can buy and install days in advance, then activate it at your destination without wasting any validity.

Tips: download offline maps on Wi-Fi before you go; disable background app refresh; set YouTube to 480p.

Airalo's unlimited plans provide 3GB of high-speed data per day. After that, speed is throttled to around 1Mbps. Throttled speed is fine for messaging, email, and maps, but video calls and HD streaming will be choppy. For most travellers, 3GB/day is more than enough.

Most plans support personal hotspot / tethering, so you can share with a tablet or laptop. Hotspot use drains data faster — use mindfully on limited plans.
